How to Build a Website Wrap Up – Pt 1

Hey Fellow Noobs, and others.

If its your first time here and want to start at the beginning of the series,  go to my first post in this series called

How To Build a Website.

This is going to be my last post in this series on Building a Website. I have broken it into two parts because it was getting quite lengthy, but don’t worry I am publishing them at the same time.

I always hated those TV programs that were continued next week.

In this post we are going to clean up the website you built , and in Part Two discuss paid or Premium Themes, and I want to show you the theme I use for Newbie2Newbie.  Socrates

The first thing that you want to do is access the back end , or dashboard. In my case it’s www.yourspringwedding.com/wp-admin , enter user and password, and you should be here.

Click on Posts

Remember to click on the images to enlarge them, and click the back button to return to this page.

You will see a default post Hello world. Mouse over the area and you will see this.

Hello world!

Click Trash to remove the post.

Next, we are going to remove all the default links,  so click on the Links button.

Links Image

Tick all the links, change the setting to Delete in the box with the arrow pointing to it at the bottom, and click Apply.

Delete Links Image

One last thing we need to remove a plugin and activate a Spam plugin called Akismet.

For a detailed explanation of Plugins go to WordPress .

Click Plugins.

Plugins Image

Delete the Hello dolly plugin, and  activate the Akismet plugin.

Activate Akismet Image

As you can see by this page you will need an API key to activate Akismet.

Click on API Key

Akismet API Key Image

You will then see the following page. Akismet is free if your blog doesn’t make over five hundred dollars a month, so I think we’re both safe….. at least for now ;)

Free Akismet Key Image

Check the Free Akismet radio button, fill in your details, and hit next.

Akismet Form Image

You will next get a confirmation page , go to your email, copy the code,  come back to your plugins page, and enter your Akismet API Key.

Enter Akismet Key Image

You will the get a Confirmation Page like below, and that’s it.

If you are wondering, like I was, what’s all the fuss is about spam. I mean nobody even knows about your blog yet.

Check this out. Akismet has caught more spam than I have real comments LOL.

You have to read these they’re quite comical.

Oh, and check to see if your real comment’s are mistaken for spam, just like your email. It happens once in a while.

Take a look at these…..

I think this one is my personal favorite though.

My Personal Favorite Image

Well that last part was a blast. I think I might make it a feature and call it Sunday Spam or something, let me know what you think.

In part 2 of this post on Building a Website, I will be talking about paid or premium themes for wordpress, and showing you the Socrates Theme which Newbie@Newbie uses.

If you liked this post please share and Tweet, and if you know of any Noobs that could benefit from this blog, please send them my way.

Thanks

Neil

Good job with the your layout here for putting the blog together.

I know the process hasn’t changed but I have it just looks so much easier now.

And I mean that as a great compliment to you. I think you taking it in baby steps will really help the up and coming “noob”.

      Hey Steve,

I took out the ~~~, whatever that character is called. Originally I used it to separate the images, but discovered it looked better without it.

That’s why I think it’s a good idea to jump in and play around, try different things, and tweak them. You don’t really know what works until you try it, and can always go back and adjust it later if you want to.

      Take care,

      Neil

  2. Hi Neil,

if I had had these easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions when setting up my blog, it would have saved me tons of time and energy.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Cheers

I hear you Oliver, I have spent literally hours trying to do something that was quite simple, but didn’t have the instructions.
The internet is a great resource, but it’s trying to find where the information is that can sometimes be difficult.

      Thanks for the encouragement :)

      Neil

  3. Great continuation from your previous post.
Having these instructions makes it much easier for a lot of people.

I do hope you realize how easy you’re making it for people now.

    Thanks.

    Have a good day,

Then the plan is working :)

Actually we have it pretty good, even a few years ago the learning curve was way to high for most people to have a website… Gotta love progress !

      Thanks again Mavis,

I think I’m going to start adding some posts with more text, and possibly video.

      There’s a bit of a learning curve, but I’m having a blast :)

      See you soon,

  7. Love your take on spam comments, Neil – sometimes all we can do is laugh at them.

Akismet is great though; it’s like a good vacuum cleaner – does a great job and is fascinating to watch.
