I Fired my Internet Marketing Gurus

Dear Internet Marketing Gurus,

I arrived home a short while ago from work, and turned on my computer to try to do some work on my blog. When I went to check my email in box there were about 30 emails regarding the next “launch of the century”.

Did we not just do this last week ? Didn’t another one of your friends have a product that they were selling, and you tried to get me to buy that one too ?

I am very glad I haven’t bought anything from you, because it looks to me as if you are giving your last product away as a bonus if I buy your friends latest offering through your affiliate link.

I’m sure that all  the people that bought it from you will be very happy to hear that you are now giving something away for free, that they paid for a few months ago.

I really feel sorry for the people that actually believe that “this is the one”, You know the ones that bought your last offer, and it doesn’t seem to be working for them, so they think that this one will do the trick. The ones that are in dire financial trouble wanting a life preserver, and you throw them an anchor.

You Mr Guru better hope that there’s no such thing as karma, cause if there is your in trooouble !!

I noticed a few new faces in the spam that you sent me. New faces to the spam, not internet marketing, and to them I say ” it’s not to late to come back from the dark side “. I know that you can make a few fast bucks, but it’s not worth it.

Yours truly,

Neil Macdonald

Now don’t get me wrong here. I am not saying that all affiliates are bad people. I have affiliate links on my site, and from time to time, when I see a product that I think is genuinely worth it, or that I use, I will put up a link.  Some of my best friends are affiliates :)

If you are going to buy anything online, please check it out first !! If the person you are buying it from has been around for a while, Google their name, and find out what products they have sold in the past.

Do your due diligence, and do not buy any thing you cannot afford. Do some research, save some money, opportunities on the internet are not going away, they are increasing!!

Do your homework !! Knowledge is power… there is no magic Google dust that will have you making 6 figures in two months.

This is hard work.  Just keep doing the next right thing, and you will get there.

Take care,

Neil

Working From Home – I’m not there yet

sheep image

I'm Going Baaaahhhk to work

In the last 5 weeks I have had the fantastic opportunity to see what it is like to work from home.

As some of you know I was blessed with losing my job. Unfortunately, in the very near future, I will have to return to the 40/50/40 plan for a while.

(40hrs a week/50weeks a year/ for 40years) …  sounds terrible ’cause it is !!!

Anyway, with this terrible event pending, and the fact that I will not be able to spend as much time working from home on my blog etc. plus the fact that I have allowed a lot of junk to accumulate on my computer, I decided to do a good thorough house cleaning.

The first thing I did was clean up my desktop.

I had free ebooks, audios, videos, and tools that I would “eventually get to”. So I deleted a whole lot of them, and the others I put in my documents.

My desk top now has two and a half columns of things I actually use, and need. WooHoo !!!

The next thing I did was tackled my documents.

This was even worse than my desktop. Not only did I have all of the above,  I  had all the screen shots from my blog posts, and nothing was in folders. So I deleted a bunch of junk, and put the rest in folders.

A lot of clicks later my documents is about a quarter of the size it was.

I just had a thought… the mess my desktop, and my documents is  like saving newspaper articles, magazines and books you never read, for a later time.

I have a picture in my head of a house with many, many cats, and piles of unread stuff around. LOL

Now I’m on a roll… Gmail…. Ekkkkkk !!!

Every morning that I opened my gmail I had a very long list of peoples latest offerings. While some of the names that I subscribe to are pretty heavy hitters in my field, they honestly do not provide me with very much value. Just affiliate offers from them, and their friends. I think some of them forgot that you need to also provide value to your list.

Sooo…… Buh Bye my old friends.

I unsubscribed from a ton of people, and deleted a bunch of emails that were put in the “read later pile”.

Next, were the Gmail folders that I had.., and I had a lot ! I would actually just file a lot of emails into someones folder without opening it, “for future use”.  Most of them I have just deleted. I figure if I didn’t even know what they were, I won’t miss them.  Sooo…..  kthxbye.

These gmail ones are funny, it’s like subscribing to all the morning newspapers from your city, and the surrounding areas, and then trying to read them before you start to work, or keeping them to read later.

It is a very strange feeling to open up your email and find nothing there. A bit of panic sets in, and then the “what do I do now” feeling, but that is good.

Now, I can concentrate on what I need to do first. What should my priorities be ?

What do I want to accomplish with this blog, and in IM?

I’m still working on that, and will probably write a  post about it, but getting rid of some of the distractions, and the time sucking useless tasks has freed up a lot of valuable time. For now though,  I’m going to tackle my Favorites,  Bookmarks, and RSS feed that I have never read.

What have you done to declutter your working environment ? Are you doing things in your business that are beneficial, and are in line with the direction you want to go, or are you on the wrong side of the 80/20 rule ?

Please leave me a comment, and funny stories etc. I really want to know your experiences… I can’t be the only one that does this… can I ? LOL

Thanks,

Neil

Keywords for Beginners [2]

Keyword Solution Image

As I said in my last post, Keywords for Beginners I jumped the gun a bit showing you the keyword tools, but didn’t want you to feel overwhelmed by all the information without, showing that there are ways to significantly reduce the work needed to do good keyword research.

Just one thing that I didn’t mention last time. The search engines recognize singular and plural,  so keyword, and keywords are two separate words to them.

That said, I wanted to show you a couple of more ways to and find some more keywords.

Let’s get started by entering our keyword into Google. On the left side of Googles results page you will see the wonder wheel.

Wonder Wheel

When you click on it you will get the following pages, they are Googles suggested related searches.
Wonder Wheel Image

Wonder Wheel Google

Another place to find keywords is at the bottom of Googles results page.

Google Related Searches

Ok, so hopefully you have a very long list of keywords, some people more organized than me create Excel spread sheets to keep all the data together.

You could go to Traffic Travis right now and start entering in your keywords to check out if they are viable, but I’m going to take it a step further. Go back to Google External Adwords Tool.

First I want to add a column called estimated average CPC

Google Adwords Columns

Customize Columns

There are a few things to look at in the image below.

First the difference between Exact and Broad Matches. An exact match is you guessed it exact. A broad Match uses any combination of the words in your keyword phrase, and the individual words by themselves. I am going to use exact.

Second is the competition.

Third is Global Monthly Search Volume, and the last is Average CPC.

Yoga Clothes

While judging competition from the keywords tool isn’t the best way to do it. It does give you an idea of how many pages are competing for that keyword. You could have very high competition for a keyword, but the pages have not been optimized for it. Conversely, the competition may be low for a particular keyword, but the pages are highly optimized. That’s why we use a tool like Traffic Travis.

By looking at the Global Monthly Search Volume for Yoga Clothes, we can see that has 33 100 searches, also the Estimated Average CPC is $1.49 (which means someone is willing to pay for advertising on that keyword) . Take a look at Cotton Yoga Clothes just below. The Search Volume  is only 170, and the CPC is $0.05.

Yoga Clothes is worth further investigation, Cotton Yoga Clothes is not. Remember even if you get the number one spot in Google, you still only get about 40% of the clicks.

So lets take our list that we have reduced and go to Traffic Travis. This is the free download link if you don’t have it already.

What we are looking for here is to see if we can rank easily for the keyword we chose. Low PR, low domain age, not to many back links. Don’t worry about the total back links for Zappos, Nike, Amazon, etc. Those are going to be very high.  What we are looking for are websites that are ranking in the top 10 that are not well optimized, possibly an affiliate site that someone didn’t do a very good job optimizing. Which you will see by the number of X’s.

Yoga Clothes

As you can see in this image, it would be easier to rank for the keyword plus size yoga clothes.

I just made a quick 2 min. video. Please take a look at how I am now on the first page of Google for the keyword “Keywords for Beginners” with very little effort in a few days. I think this video will clarify what keywords not to go after, and this is one of them.

Keywords for Beginners

What is a Keyword ?

Keyword Research ImageThe basic definition of a keyword, is a word or phrase, that is typed into the search box in your browser.

The Search Engine then decides, based on the keyword that you have entered, the most relevant information, and displays it on the results page.

The reason that keywords are so critical is, that you want your page to be in the top results in order for anyone to find it.

The keywords that you use tell Google, and the other search engines what your page is about.

Keyword research is not something to be done once when building a website , and then forgotten, it should be a something that you do regularly.

You need be constantly analyzing  what keywords are working for you and which aren’t.  Focus on your good keywords, get rid of the bad ones and keep looking for new ones.

If you aren’t constantly doing keyword research, your competition sure is. Some of the big guys have hundreds, even thousands of keywords.

You are writing articles anyway, you might as well optimize them when you do it.

While social media, is great for spreading the word about your site, what would happen if you stopped ?

Keyword research is one of the ways to optimize your website, to get free traffic from the search engines. That traffic won’t stop  if you  keep on doing , and improving your on site optimization.

Large companies pay unbelievable amounts of money to have good ranking in the search engines, but you can do it for free, with good keyword research, and some other simple methods for increasing your rankings.

So where do you start, well there is a saying out there that you write for people not search engines. In truth you can do both. A good idea when first thinking about what keywords to use is to think of what words you type into the search box.

If your site was selling Yoga clothes, and Yoga accessories. You need to think of a lot of  keywords that you think people will search for. Yoga clothes probably has a lot of competition, but you still want to use it, so you will start to rank for that keyword.

How about Yoga clothes for kids, men, women . Yoga mats, yoga mat bags,  yoga rugs, yoga pants, yoga apparel.

Use some qualifiers, plus sizes, cheap, hot, organic, people who do yoga are probably interested in being green, or some brand names.

I hope you are starting to get the idea, and am going to stop now, so I don’t start ranking for yoga clothes. LOL

You still need to use your  main keywords, but will have a better chance of ranking for the longer ones. They are known as Long Tail Keywords, or as some people call them, the low hanging fruit. That’s another post :)

Keyword Tools

Ok, so now you have your preliminary list of keywords, you now need to find some more.

Lets go to Google Adwords External Keyword Tool

Put your keyword into the searchbox, and hit search Google will then find you a list of keywords that relate to the one that you entered.

A lot of people will stop here grab the keywords with the most traffic and start popping them in their website. This is a really bad plan, and is doomed to fail. You need to do some further research.

Google Keyword Tool Image

In this image you can refine your search by country,  filtering out keywords, and adjusting the monthly searches.

Keyword Tool by Google

You now have what I hope is a long list of keywords, so what do you do with them now ? More research !!

Don’t worry it’s easy.

There is a really cool free keyword tool put out by Mark Ling of Affilorama, and its called Traffic Travis.

Not only can you do keyword research there is also , Search Engine Tools, Page Analysis, SEO Analysis, PPC Analysis, and Keyword Tools all for free.

Simply put your keyword into the search box, and Traffic Travis will pull information from the internet telling you how tough the competition will be for a certain keyword, or keyword phrase, what the page rank is, how well the site is optimized, for the first 20 websites that rank for that keyword. Cool eh !

Before each module there is a detailed video explaining how it works, so I won’t go into anymore detail.

I have rushed over the last part on purpose. I wanted to show the tools, so you could see how easy basic keyword research can be, but am going to go into more detail in my next post.

There is a lot more to keywords, and keyword research,  but this should give you a basic understanding.

In my next post I will go into more detail on these keyword tools, competition on a keyword, is it worth going after a keyword, and more.

Working from Home- Do you Need to Make as much Money as you Think?

Work at Home ImageIf you want to start a home based business, whether it’s building a website or anything else, a very important issue is how much  money do you need to make before you can quit your full time job.

This post was precipitated by a couple of events that have happened to me recently.

The first one was a conversation that I had with a co worker.

The second one is that I recently lost my job.

I’ll start with my co worker first.

We were going to lunch one day, talking about a variety of things when the subject of paying for daycare for your children came up.

She has two kids who need to be in daycare while she, and her husband go to work. I knew daycare was rather expensive, but when she told me that she paid $240 per week I almost fell down.
We started to talk about it further, and I asked her if it was even worth it to go to work.

I mean, even at first glance, if she took home $500 per week and you subtract the $240 for child care, it’s really $260 she’s taking home per week.

She told me the main reason she worked was for the benefits. You can buy a lot of benefits for $240 per week. Oh, by the way we were on our way to buy an $8 Chicken Caesar Salad which we did at least three times a week. There’s another $24.

I think you can see where I’m going here, but I want to tell you about my situation.

Like I said ealier, I lost my job.

In my eyes this has been an extremely good thing. It has given me a chance to build this website, connect with some really great people, and learn in the last three weeks, what would have taken me months to learn.

“In my life nothing ever goes wrong”  Wayne Dyer

Anyway, like I said I haven’t been going to work, but I noticed that I seemed to have more money. I live in a fairly big city so for me taking public transportation makes more sense than driving, but it still costs $6 per day.
I have also not been buying any clothes. (I’m a bit of a clothes horse), watching what I buy in the grocery store, etc

Keep in mind all the money you spend is also after tax dollars,  speaking of taxes, while I’m no authority by any means, but I do know there are some benefits of having an at home business.

Here in Canada, if you use a room specifically for your business you can write off that part of your rent or mortgage, utilites, phone, and even that $8 Chicken Ceasar Salad, as long as your discussing business while eating it.

You must check the tax laws in your area. I am not a professional.

Wrapping it up here’s just some ideas I thought of just off the top of my head.

Daycare, Lunches, Clothes for work, Travel expenses, Tax benefits.

So,  how much money do you really need to make to start a business from home. Just by barely scratching the surface, I have come up with quite a few. I’m definitely going to delve into this a lot further, and I think that the goal of how much to shoot for just got dramatically reduced, and more within reach.

What are some of the ways that you can think of to put owning your own business, and working from home closer to becoming a reality ?

Please leave your comments, Tweet and share.

For those of you that have already made the transition, I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Lets kick this around a bit.

Thanks as always,

Neil
